“Chelsea haven’t got what you’d describe as a ‘winning past,’ opened Thompson

“They’ve only had success since Jose has been there.”

“Maybe now with the Russian money you’ll see the next generation coming through in the years to come and the likes of Frank Lampard, John Terry and Ashley Cole might become pundits.”

Thompson made his point in response to Mourinho’s suggestions that the club “don’t have a single pundit.”

“Lots of people on TV, but nobody a Chelsea man: Carragher, Liverpool; Thompson, Liverpool; Redknapp, Liverpool. Lawrenson, Liverpool; Hansen, Liverpool. We don’t have one,” Mourinho earlier argued.

“When I retire, 75 years old, I go as a pundit to defend Chelsea on television.”

However Thompson also refuted Mourinho’s claim not to have a single pundit, pointing to former player and assistant Ray Wilkins, before claiming that Chelsea’s past players have not been good enough to make it is as pundits.

“They’ve always had the likes of Ray Wilkins, who’s a former player that is always very supportive of Chelsea,” said Thompson.

“But the fact is that there weren’t enough Chelsea players who were good enough in the past.”

“When you’ve been there, done it and got the T-shirt, what you say carries a lot of weight.”
