The setting of Lorelai and the Laser Eyes is a mysterious old manor in central Europe. The trailer shows a woman wandering through the halls, solving puzzles in order to solve some sort of secret mystery. As the game summary suggests, the mystery could involve multiple murders, which is par for the course, as the murder mystery genre is quite popular right now. The mostly black-and-white trailer doesn’t reveal much more about the story, but it does provide a rich atmosphere, especially hinting at the Laser Eyes from the game’s title.
The description from the Nintendo Store page mysteriously hints at more characters in the game like an international auteur, an aristocratic artist, and a vagabond illusionist. It also invites players into the nightmarish surreality of the game’s enigmatic atmosphere in order to help the wandering woman solve the puzzle and resolve the mystery. The mysterious nature of the game’s description adds to the drama and mystery surrounding the game.
The trailer is reminiscent of Device 6, Simogo’s text-based mystery game for iOS, even though Lorelai and the Laser Eyes is drawn in a stylish 3D manner. The camera seems to alter perspectives, sometimes in the corner of a room, sometimes high above, and sometimes in first-person. Similarly, Simogo’s previous game, Sayonara Wild Hearts, also had a varied approach to style and perspective.
Although it isn’t clear exactly how the players will interact with the world or what the gameplay loop will look like, the mysterious visuals and puzzling nature of Lorelai and the Laser Eyes has fans excited to step into the enigma when the game is released. Along with Stray, fans are looking forward to this game from Annapurna Interactive.
Lorelai and the Laser Eyes launches sometime in 2023 for PC and Nintendo Switch.
